UCD Unit Tackles Community Issues Via UC Research, Outreach
Building local leadership, fortifying local government and strengthening local economies are the goals of a new UC Davis program aimed at focusing the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resource's community development and outreach work, according to its director. David Campbell says the California Communities Program, a new Cooperative Extension program within the UCD Department of Human and Community Development, will emphasize collaborative work with other programs, both within and outside UC. "We see this as a great opportunity to focus the knowledge and resources of the university on public service that meets the needs of local communities," he says. Campbell, who also works as the community development and public policy analyst at the UC Davis-based statewide Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP), hopes to expand on his work linking sustainable agriculture to community economic development. The California Communities Program will co-sponsor a community food systems conference "Sustaining Farms and People in the Emerging Economy," Oct. 2-3, 1996 with SAREP, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, and the national Community Food Security Coalition.
