10 Years & Still Funding Sustainable Ag…

It's ten years old this year, and the UC-Davis based statewide Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) is gearing up for it's tenth year of grants. "We've awarded more than $2.8 million to approximately 200 basic and applied research projects, economic and public policy projects, seminars and field demonstrations and graduate student projects," says Bill Liebhardt, SAREP director. "We're encouraged by all the organizations and institutions both within and outside the university funding research projects dealing with sustainability issues," he says. Liebhardt says the increased pool of funding is important because California's fiscal problems in the early 1990s has reduced the amount of money available for SAREP grants. "We're expecting to fund continuing and new projects for about $190,000 this year," Liebhardt says. The deadline for applications is August 1, 1996. The Request for Proposals is available by mail or via the World Wide Web (http://www.sarep.ucdavis.edu/). Contact SAREP at (530) 752-7556.
