PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: The theme of the 2nd National Symposium on Food Systems and Sustainability is “Making the Invisible Visible.” The agenda includes interactive tours where guests will explore four thematic areas important to food and agriculture – youth, power, justice, and resilience.
The interactive tours include:
- Work in the field with new, young farmers at The Center for Land-Based Learning’s Farm on Putah Creek. Discuss the financial, cultural and systemic obstacles to entering farming today.
- Interact with students at Grant Union High School in Sacramento, who have created a student garden and kitchen program to tackle neighborhood food access challenges. Work with them to design a high school curriculum that shows why real food is important.
- Explore food access challenges in Ceres, CA with local activists in the Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program. Learn about their success and barriers to creating farmers markets, community gardens and markets with fresh foods in low-income neighborhoods throughout the San Joaquin Valley.
- Meet with farmworker clients of the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation and hear their stories including heat illness, and musculoskeletal injuries. Experience what a worker must go through in order to submit a wage claim when employers fail to pay them.
- Tour Hedgerow Farms, a new local leader in on-farm conservation, and take part in seeding (if weather permits). Identify barriers to adoption of on-farm habitat restoration and discuss how to increase the adoption rate.
- At UC Davis’ Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility, sample greenhouse gases from soils in cover cropped and fallow fields. Learn about past results from cover crops and greenhouse gas research and interpret your sample findings in the afternoon.

Symposium Program Overview
Tuesday, November 9 : “Making the Invisible Visible.” Through experience during field trips, participants will identify components of the food system that may be invisible or less visible to themselves and others and begin to consider how these aspects might inform research, policy, education and other agendas.
Wednesday, November 10 : “Making the Whole System Visible.” What happens when we can “see” the whole system? What possibilities are unleashed through the visualization and integration of “invisible” elements? How do we leverage these possibilities?
Who is attending: Invited guests include INFAS members, Kellogg/IATP (Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy) Food and Society Fellows, Real Food Challenge student leaders, and journalists and other media representatives.
