UC Sustainable Ag, IPM programs offering funding for agriculture/urban education events

Two University of California statewide special programs are pooling their resources to fund workshops, field days, seminars and other events addressing integrated pest management in agricultural or urban settings, sustainability of crop and livestock systems, and the development of sustainable community food systems.

The UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) and UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Project (IPM) are jointly offering grants of up to $1,500 for events taking place between July 1, 2002 and June 30, 2003. Total funding available is $45,000. The deadline for proposals is March 13, 2002.

"We're hoping to be able to help farmers and consumers throughout the state in their efforts to adopt more sustainable practices by funding these workshops," said David Chaney, SAREP education coordination.

"These grant funds provide a unique opportunity for those working toward more sustainable pest management systems to get together and share information," said Jim Lyons, interim IPM director.

The grants are available to individuals affiliated with California public or private educational institutions, non-profit, tax-exempt organizations, or state or federal government agencies. Participation of UC Cooperative Extension in proposals is encouraged. Complete guidelines of how to apply for funding are included in the full Request for Proposals (RFP) posted on SAREP's Web site at www.sarep.ucdavis.edu/grants/request.htm.
