Strengthening Communities through Farms, Gardens

A UCD nutritionist/food systems analyst, renowned restaurateur Alice Waters and a nationally known prison garden director will be among those speaking at a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) conference November 12-14 in San Francisco. Gail Feenstra, food systems analyst for the UCD-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP), will show how CSA farms can reach out to communities in need. Community Supported Agriculture is a general term for farms which have a direct relationship with a community of consumers, Feenstra says. The individual farms are called CSAs, and they actively involve the public with the people who grow food. Community gardens and CSAs can bring homeless people, welfare recipients and other marginalized groups back into their communities through local food, Feenstra adds. The Davis-based Small Farm Center and SAREP are among the conference sponsors. Sample food boxes from subscription farms and gourmet organic lunches will be available at the Fort Mason conference site.
