With a growing interest in gardening, food preservation and livestock, urban agriculture is making its way to the forefront of planning and policy agendas. Impacts of urban agriculture include better access to food, economic opportunity and environmental benefits. The UC Sustainable Agriculture and Education Program and UC Agriculture and Natural Resource Division (UC ANR) are embarking on efforts to build capacity within UC ANR’s programs to serve urban farmers and urban agriculture policy makers. Through a UC ANR competitive grant, UC SAREP created several resources to make current research on impacts accessible to urban agriculture practitioners.
Urban Agriculture Resources
The UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) and UC ANR conducted a literature review on the impacts of urban agriculture. The following are tools for policy makers and urban agriculture practitioners to use for building a compelling and strong case for urban agriculture.
SAREP has compiled this extensive annotated bibliography on social, health, and economic impacts of urban agriculture. The bibliography includes peer-reviewed articles from academic journals, professional reports from non-profits, foundations, and government agencies, as well as a few books. This annotated bibliography is meant to provide policy makers and urban agriculture practitioners with articles that discuss researched impacts. It is accompanied by a quick reference resource called Urban Agriculture Impacts: Social, Health and Economic: At a Glance.
This spreadsheet is a quick reference that accompanies the Urban Agriculture Impacts: Social, Economic, and Health: An Annotated Bibliography. It lists the author and date of each article in the annotated bibliography and indicates the specific impacts discussed in that article. It also indicates if the impact is empirically researched as well as if the article was a professional report or peer-reviewed research. This reference is meant to be a quick and easy way to filter through the annotated bibliography and select relevant publications.
This paper is a literature review that summarizes the social, economic, and health impacts discussed in the literature. It was written from the literature included in Urban Agriculture Impacts: Social, Economic, and Health: An Annotated Bibliography. It is meant to be a synthesis of the most commonly cited impacts.
